“The gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of Alejandra Moros in Europe.

The works created for “Pierce, Push, Pull, Press” push the artist’s practice towards new limits. Continuing to explore the language developed so far, the artist seeks an immersive approach, similar to a representation under a microscope’s lens where the progressive and obsessive zoom gives an enigmatic representation of the subjects. Her hyper-realism becomes almost abstract: the trait is maniacal but it is difficult to decipher what it really represents.

Playing with this ambiguity, Alejandra finds an innovative language to deal with one of the most classic themes: the human body. The artist always represents very limited parts of it, abstracting them from the general context. This allows the development of a multi-sensory approach to her works.

Challenged by the difficulty of understanding the subject visually, we can focus on the other sensations that the painting suggests: sometimes a sensual erotic ambiguity, but predominantly an approach that I would define as tactile. An impulse to touch these bodies, their skin and the softness of their meatiness curled in the folds. It seems to express the dampness of these hands, where only jewels give any clues to orient us.

As the title of the exhibition suggests, for Alejandra, bodies are not a static or statuary subject. On the contrary, it is in dynamism that the body expresses its most real and carnal traits. In order to grasp these details, the artist asks her friends to move their bodies: pushing, attracting, intertwining. The photos and videos of these moments constitute the material of inspiration for the artist.

“Spinello Projects presents Tip of the Tongue, Bridge of the Nose, the Miami debut solo exhibition of artist Alejandra Moros. This show presents a collection of paintings that explore the intimacy of portraiture through extreme close-ups of the human body and its adornments. 

In Tip of the Tongue, Bridge of the Nose, Moros uses painting to document the closest people in her life, presenting them in a way that challenges the viewer’s perception of reality, forcing them to question what they are looking at. Moros’ works are a blend of hyperrealism, abstraction, surrealism, and portraiture. She manipulates oil paint into mono-hued paintings that are rich in detail and devoted to care towards the people she paints. Through fragmentation and dissociation, the works delve into the ambiguity of the human form, and the sensations associated with texture, touch, and sight.

Moros’ work focuses on microscopic details, zooming in on the tiniest elements of the body, such as skin pores, wrinkles, fingerprints, and worn jewelry creating an uncanny, unearthly sense of intimacy, and by contrast, detachment. Moros’ analytical approach to painting dissects a visual experience that elicits a feeling of tension. Moros wants to create the impression that the viewer knows something that they can’t quite communicate – the feeling that “it’s on the tip of your tongue.” The images that Moros creates communicates the tension that is held in our bodies and mind, the inherent qualities of perception and imagination, and the ambiguity that lies within the self and in relationships.”

“The weight of meaning rests upon a set of immediate factors that may involve context, relevance and myriad personal circumstances that link an observer with what it is that they are drawing meaning from. What is perhaps less potent in this cognitive whirl is the role played by scale, or resolution - the perceptive point of distance from which someone is able to analyse something. If we look upon a sunlit meadow from a sitting position on a blanket, we may see peace and tranquillity; there becomes a point however, where the scale at which the same environment can be observed may reveal the turmoil and violence present throughout the natural world.The latest series of paintings from Miami based artist Alejandra Moros allows us to view symbols of the everyday at a scale that brings out their obscure elegance. She guides us into a semi-secretive space where the objects she paints are defiantly wonderful, transcending any preconceptions we may hold towards them. This is not however the only dimension to the work. As a counterbalance, her paintings also remind us of the corporeal world, the discomfort of seeing skin under tension, a woozy and not completely pleasant interaction of textures.These conflicting ideas complexify what could be seen as technically astounding but deceptively straightforward paintings. Residing inside narrow hues and focusing on only one or two primary elements, the depths to which the work can be experienced are sunk into over time and with space for contemplation.The notion of portraiture, for instance, is probed in examples that focus on fine details of the human body. At the scale Alejandra works at, we will never see a fully formed body, or face, but we may see the curve of an eyelid. If a portrait could be characterised by an inherent sense of intimacy and personal exchange between the artist and the subject, focusing on a specific detail, if anything, deepens the intimacy. It shares with us something ultimately more beguiling, more invasive even, but built on a more sophisticated sense of trust and intention.Inverting the soothing intimacy and challenging closeness, opposing orders of magnitude occasionally crop up in Alejandra’s work. What has its roots in the interior of a shell may briefly resemble a womb or the inner ear, before the eye and mind find themselves staring at some kind of cosmic structure. This may well be the high point in the illusory magic of these paintings: the feeling that you can be a sizeable entity inspecting the minutiae of the mundane, then suddenly roles are reversed and you are a mere fragment, overwhelmed beneath the enormity of existence.Despite the grandeur of these statements, what sits at the core of the work is resolutely humble. Colour, tone and the sensation of a flowing motion caught not by the artist but by the structures of the objects themselves, come together to create something ultimately serene. Whilst a consistency in technique bridges works together, each can be seen as its own rumination on scale, and the disorientating beauty that can be found when our perspective undergoes a profound shift.“

“The side of a thigh, a flexed hand, the crook of a knee, a wrinkled palm, a dark tendril of hair: the close, cropped framing of Alejandra Moros’ paintings feels intimate and uncomfortable – unsure if we’re meant to be looking, and at what. Yet, their luminous surface; drenched in a bright, glistening light seems to invite us in, as if lit up for the stage and consenting to our fixed stare.

As the third participating artist on the PPP/Oostmeijer residency in Amsterdam, Ale found herself alone in a foreign city during the height of the summer. While previously looking to close friends and family members as the subject for her portraits back at home in Miami; this period of solitude forced a self-reflection, as she turned to her own body as the object of study. 

Beginning her process with experimental images and videos, Alejandra has an ongoing relationship with photography. Capturing herself in her studio, she moves her limbs through different positions and movements – revisiting them later through crops and closely zoomed edits. Ale notes the artist Moyra Davey’s musings on photography in her book, Index Cards, as influential to this particular body of work. While Davey explores the relationship between photography and writing, Alejandra is exploring the relationship between photography and painting. We see the photographic techniques of cropping, enlarging and zooming being applied to her paintings; filling the canvas with increasingly abstract compositions of bodily fragments.

While Alejandra’s skilful blending renders the paintings almost photographic, her use of monochromatic colour undermines their realism. Lustrous hues of green, yellow, orange and pink cast over her paintings, likening these sites of wrinkled skin to candied fruits or petaled flowers. The works share a similar ambiguity with the artist Georgia O’Keeffe, famously known for her abstracted formations of flowers. While O’Keeffe’s paintings were interpreted as euphemistic depictions of female genitalia, a suggestion the artist continuously denied, Alejandra’s paintings feel more overtly provocative. Clothing is notably absent, and intimate moments of touch are given central focus. In Stomach, Side, the sensation of touch is heightened through the impression left by fingers on spongy pink surface, forming creases and folds that radiate from the site of contact.

The texture in Catch, Release (diptych) is similarly palpable, the delicate yellow grooves resembling the detail of a sliced sweet pepper. Alejandra’s attention to surface can be likened to the traditions of Dutch still life paintings that hang in Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum. Executed with the same precision and intricacy, Alejandra lists Willem Kalf’s Still Life with a Silver Ewer as an artistic reference. Kalf’s detailing of each bump and bulge on a lemon rind is as pronounced as Alejandra’s microscopic pores, highlighted by a similarly stark and illuminating light.

Alejandra’s paintings are vulnerable and enigmatic, curious and suggestive. Comfortable with their resistance to recognition, the works are generous invitations into one’s intimate experience of corporeality; forcing us to reckon with what we think we see and accept that we might never be sure.“
